Get The Most Out of West Michigan’s Biggest Car Cruise with Classic Cars, Great BBQ, Fun & Games

Every year, more and more Michigan residents discover what Grand Rapids-area natives have known for a decade plus – the 28th St Metro Cruise is West Michigan’s biggest and most exciting car cruise!  With over 250,000 visitors and an estimated 15,000 participating cars, the cruise’s size and scope is second only to the Woodward Dream Cruise in Southeast Michigan.  Organized by the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by several local businesses including Wimsatt Building Materials, the cruise is in its 13th year with many attractions for car enthusiasts and their families.  The cruise takes place all up and down 28th Street in Wyoming, with many businesses along the street hosting show cars in their parking lots.  Rogers Plaza is the epicenter of the cruise, with hundreds of cars on display, many vendors showcasing their automotive wares, live music, live radio broadcasts, over a dozen food trucks, and various scheduled events for attendees.  Best of all, admission to all aspects of the cruise is FREE!

It can be challenging for attendees to stake out a home base for the cruise, with parking spaces at local business quite limited and lawn extension street frontage available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Planning how to enjoy the cruise while securing a great spot can be stressful.  But for car enthusiasts that also happen to be roofers, remodelers, builders, or home improvement specialists, there is another option…

Contractor Cruisers are Welcome at Wimsatt!

Wimsatt Building Materials Grand Rapids is located on 28th St. just a block west of Rogers Plaza.  It’s the perfect spot to take in the cruise and display a show car… and it’s only available to ALL Wimsatt customers!  This year we’re hosting our 4th annual 28th Metro Cruise Customer Appreciation BBQ, sponsored for the third year in a row by CertainTeed Roofing.  In addition to all the attractions that the cruise has to offer, Wimsatt customers are welcome to come celebrate with us to enjoy:

Wimsatt Schedule of Events

We have several exciting events planned for customers to enjoy while taking in the cruise:

Friday 8/25

4pm-7pm: BBQ Dinner catered by Holland’s Hog Wild BBQ – back in 2014, they catered our Wimsatt Grand Rapids Grand Opening and we’ve had them back every year since for the Metro Cruise!  Hog Wild slow-smokes their meats over hickory in state-of-the art Friedrich BBQ pits for exceptional flavor, and you’re not going to want to miss the Hog Wild Pasta Salad either!

Saturday 8/26

1708-GR-28th-St-BBQ-020.jpg7:30am-8:00am: Flag Raising.  In what’s become a proud tradition for Wimsatt, Grand Rapids Warehouse Manager Bill White commandeers the crown jewel of our commercial delivery equipment, knuckle boom truck #282, to raise the American Flag over the bandstand at Rogers Plaza prior to the cruise’s opening ceremony and recitation of the National Anthem at 9am.

11:30am – 2pm: Pig Roast.  Longtime Wimsatt Spring Show attendees and low slope contractors alike will recognize our chef for lunch on Saturday – it’s none other than industry veteran Ron French!  While Ron is best known for representing Karnak and Hunter Panels in our industry, he moonlights as R&R BBQ and roasting pigs is his specialty!  We’re excited to have Ron on board for the cruise this year!

1pm – 3pm:  Car Contest.  All show cars parked in the Wimsatt lot from 1pm to 3pm will be automatically included in our Car Contest.  All registered Wimsatt guests receive a wristband and three tokens (one for each car class) that allows them to vote for their favorite show cars via private ballot.  The car classes are King of the Classics (Model years 1900-1969), The Raddest Ride (Model years 1970-1999), and Modern Masterpiece (Model years 2000-2018).  Winners will be announced at 4pm.  Each winner will receive a pair of commemorative YETI Colsters!  Brought to you by the Wimsatt Customer Classic Car Association (WCCCA).

4pm – 7pm: BBQ Dinner.  Saturday’s dinner is being catered by The Grilling Co. of Belmont, MI.  The Grilling Co. blew everyone away last year with an incredible spread of specialty sausages and friendly service, so we promoted them to Saturday dinner this year!

1708-gabe-in-car.jpgCars, games, music, food… it’s going to be a good time!

...and if you’re a Wimsatt customer then you’re invited to join us! If you would like to show your car or even just attend the Wimsatt 28th St Metro Cruise Customer Appreciation BBQ, contact your Wimsatt salesperson or RSVP on our events page today!
